Knowledge that is self-serving and divorced from community service is useless and treacherous. But knowledge acquired to nourish one’s soul and serve others, can be a kind and dependable ally.

The Purpose of Life

The Purpose of Life by Ayesha Javed

We are living in strange times. Hundreds of thousands of people have left this world on account of the pandemic. Their lives were just as valuable as yours or mine. This should be a moment of deep reflection for all of us. We should realize what a gift life is, a precious gift from God, and how every waking moment is a blessing. We should be compelled to contemplate the true meaning and purpose of our lives.

When God created us, God did not intend to forsake us or leave us in the dark. Rather, we were given the tools to fully realize our mental and spiritual potential. This is why our lives are filled with examples of wisdom and knowledge. It is up to us to formulate the meaning of our lives in light of such guidance. Only a purposeful life can awaken thoughtful action and hard work, and only through action can we fully access our power and hope for improvement and progress.

According to the poet and philosopher Muhammad Iqbal, when Adam took his first steps in the world, the angels welcomed him thus:

Open your eyes: behold the sky and earth and atmosphere
Look at the sun rising in the east

Meaning, comprehend and analyze this world so you can triumph.

I consider myself extremely fortunate that at the age of five, I experienced an academic and literary environment whose profound effects continue to enrich my life. My education began at the Embassy School in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The school’s wonderful atmosphere and the selfless dedication of our teachers were both rare — hard to find in this day and age. Our school’s annual graduation was celebrated with great enthusiasm. There would be plays and speech competitions inspired by the poetry of Allama Iqbal and other well-known poets. All the people associated with the school, both teachers and students, were keen to participate in those functions. Such literary events had far reaching effects, beyond the walls of the school, and were successful in bringing together the community at large. To this day, everyone who was affiliated with that school remembers it with great fondness.

It was an institution that instilled a love of knowledge in all of us, and a desire for purposeful action. When educational institutions become businesses driven by profit, they can only teach students to focus on the acquisition of wealth. Purity of intention or the ability to sacrifice for others, both go by the wayside. Knowledge that is self-serving and divorced from community service is useless and treacherous. But knowledge acquired to nourish one’s soul and serve others, can be a kind and dependable ally. One of the biggest tragedies of our time is that students are not taught ilm-e-nafay (altruism) or acquainted with essential, core values. This is why students prefer to acquire information that will mostly facilitate material success.

As the poet Allama Iqbal has said:

Greed has decimated the human race
Become a statement of unity, become the language of love

Knowledge can be of two kinds: medical knowledge that has to do with healing the body, and spiritual knowledge that has to do with healing the soul. One can make the most of both if one’s intentions are honest and just, and if one takes account of divine guidance.

We are only here, on earth, for a limited time. Our present struggles, in 2020, are a powerful reminder of this fact. It would, therefore, behoove us to think carefully about the meaning of our lives, in a way that makes us useful and fully realized in the here and now, but also for generations to come.

There are two paths before us. One satisfies worldly ambitions and has a material dazzle to it. It ends when our lives end – it is impermanent and ultimately pointless. The other path is eternal, boundless, permanent. This is the path of humanitarian work, and it reflects God’s teachings.

In order to follow this eternal path, we must improve ourselves, be of service to others, and become assets for our community.

According to Iqbal:

Life is bigger than calculations of profit and loss
Sometimes life is living, and other times valuing the lives of others more

The greatest people in history, those who left a benevolent mark on the world, were people who put the needs of others before their own and served humanity with great compassion and sincerity. This is the path of salvation for all of us.
