My three-part response to the archive is based on Kirin Makker’s ‘Touch,’ Tania Day-Magallon’s ‘El Lenguaje es mi Tierra, mi Identidad,’ and Lauren Jimerson’s ‘My Story.’

I. Response to Kirin Makker’s ‘Touch’

I was inspired by the object-memories that Kirin shared in her story. In my response, I devised a shadow dance with my mother’s hand. For me, this shadow-impression is a reminder of a loved one’s touch and possible emotional content via non-verbal communication.

II. Response to Tania Day-Magallon’s ‘El Lenguaje es mi Tierra, mi Identidad’

I have also explored the theme of identity in my own work. In my choreographic response, I chose to play with a couple of different points of view as a metaphor for the facets that play a role in one’s identity. My movement motifs are derived from the images of land and mother to which Tania feels strongly connected.

III. Response to Lauren Jimerson’s ‘My Story’

Lauren’s opening thoughts struck me. In my shadow choreography, I intended to portray the lack of sympathy and support from the outside world that she felt many times.
